Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) film and Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) film are two different polymer materials that can be used for glass laminated structures. PVB has been the reference material for the glass lamination on building construction and transportation industries for many years. EVA is challenging current PVB as a laminated material because of some advantageous properties. In fact is a good material also for such type of applications, and is able to fulfill all the key properties that are required to PVB today. Not just that, it is also able to overcome some of the drawbacks of the PVB, outperforming PVB.
1. EVA film has better adhesion to all kinds of materials than that of PVB film
Under high pressure and heating , PVB has good adhesion to glass , but not to all kinds of materials . For example , de-lamination problem will happen if we use PVB to laminate PDLC film with glass . Because PVB film has a very weak adhesion to PET based material like PDLC film . So , laminating switchable glass with EVA film is the best choice .
2. EVA film has better moisture resistance than PVB film .
Water absorption of EVA film is 0.1%, while that of PVB film is around 4%. So, PVB is not allowed in some severe environment , like shower room , swimming pool or some other high-humidity places . What’s more , it is impossible to use PVB laminated glass with open edge. Otherwise , haze will appear at the edge of glass.
3. Good anti-aging performance of EVA film
After processing , EVA film will form into a three-dimension structure . That structure is extremely stable and wouldn’t affected by bad surrounding environment . The anti-aging ensure EVA film could be used outdoor for at least 15 years.
4. Safer processing and lower cost
PVB film can only work with autoclave. High pressure for sure is a danger factor. In some regions and countries , autoclave is forbidden. What’s more , autoclave would cost 20 times more than EVA film laminating line.
